Thoughts from Pastor Miller
My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Something very curious happened on Wednesday evening, November 15, following Mass: two meetings were held simultaneously and a number of people had to choose which to attend, Bible Study or Bach Board! This problem is indicative of a growing ministry. Let us give thanks for the “joyous problem” of having to make a choice on Wednesday evening.
Speaking of choices, I urge you to mark you calendar for upcoming events at Holy Trinity:
1-On Sunday, December 3, immediately following Mass, we will gather in the Community Room to discuss the second annual Holy Trinity Lenten Booklet and to choose passages from St. Mark’s Passion. You are invited to reflect on a particular passage from the gospel of Mark and to prepare a written reflection, poem, photo, or art work and a prayer for inclusion in the booklet.
2-At Bach Vespers on Sunday, December 3, 5 p.m., we will honor Bishop Robert Rimbo on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of his ordination. Bishop Rimbo was Holy Trinity’s pastor from 2005-2008 and he and his wife Lois are quite active members of Holy Trinity. The guest preacher at Vespers will be Bishop John Macholz of the Upper New York Synod/ELCA. Also, there will be a glorious Bach cantata, “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” (Savior of the Nations, Come), with the Holy Trinity Bach Choir and Players. A reception will follow.
2-On Friday, December 8, beginning at 6:00 p.m., we will gather together in the Community Room to create wreaths for the nave and the church doors. There will be a light meal served (reported to be pizza but expect a delicious surprise!). This is a wonderful intergenerational event. We need lots of hands to make our church beautiful during the Advent/Christmas season.
Finally, I am delighted to announce that at last Sunday’s Consecration Sunday, 42 member/households made 2018 financial commitments to our ministry totaling $228,108! This is astonishing news; $6,334 more have already been committed than in all of 2017 and there are still quite a few members who have yet to make their pledges. Thank you all for your remarkable generosity and thank you, as well, to the Stewardship Committee for making Consecration such a fabulous day!
These are stunning days at Holy Trinity and, as you give thanks to God for all your blessings on Thanksgiving Day, pause also to give thanks for the vibrancy of our ministry.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Wilbert Miller

Take 40 People
Lunch at Christmas
Take 40 people to lunch for Christmas…Nearly 40 years ago, Holy Trinity began a program called HUG (Human Understanding and Growth). This Saturday afternoon ministry provided warm meals in Holy Trinity’s Community Room for 40-50 people living in SRO hotels, on the streets, and in other situations in our community. Holy Trinity has decided to make this ministry our own (it will no longer be an independent 501c3). It costs $175 a week to provide meals. As a Christmas gift to someone you love or to those who come here for meals and fellowship, make a gift of any amount ($5 or $10,000) so we can continue this ministry. Make your check to “Holy Trinity Lutheran Church” with memo line “Saturday Meal.” There will be a sign-up sheet at the kiosk where you can sponsor one or fifty-two meals for $175 a week….Finally, should you wish to give someone a Christmas gift in this way, we will gladly write an acknowledgement.
The directories will be distributed to those who had their pictures taken or submitted pictures for the directory at the Consecration Sunday Luncheon this Sunday. For those who are unable to attend on Sunday, the directories will be available for pickup in the office.
