Friday, March 10
Matthew 26:42

Again he went away for the second time and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”

The arc of the universe bends to wholeness: peace, justice, compassion.   Yet, many events in life are not whole.  It is God’s will that we and all creation be well, be whole, be one — in spite of present injustice or suffering.  Jesus knew God’s will for wholeness passes through suffering.  Reinhold Niebuhr lifts up our life journey to wholeness through suffering in his prayer:  “Creator God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference — living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as the pathway to peace; taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that you will make all things right, if I surrender to your divine will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with you forever in the next. Amen.”
