Tuesday, March 28
Matthew 27:20-21

Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus killed.  The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”

“Crowd-power” is massive – for wholeness or for destruction.  Social media brought forth an Arab Spring.  Neighbors banding together bring healing following nature’s storms or human chaos.  A pint of blood isn’t much, but a community’s pints provide life to many.  However, when led by fear “crowd-power” is deadly: from a lynch mob to runs on banks, from xenophobia to AIDS or Ebola hysteria.  When truth breaks out in new ways those invested in the old grab hold of fear to drive “crowd-power.” The antidote, as always, is truth. Truth leads to life, to wholeness, to unity – to peace, justice, compassion.  Truth isn’t just true for one’s self: truth is true for all.  When “crowd-power” is led by truth it isn’t Barabbas that’s hollered, but life that bursts beautifully forth!  Truth creates life!

We pray…Creator God, open me to truth’s new vision.  Then, as truth fills my heart and mind, grant me power to proclaim truth to the crowd. Amen.
