9th Sunday after Pentecost – July 26, 2015
Mass at 11:00 a.m. Readings: 2 Kings 4:42-44; Psalm 145; Ephesians 3:14-21; John 6:1-21. Pastor Detweiler preaches and presides.
This week’s theme is God’s abundance. Whenever a small amount of food, for example, is enough to feed a crowd, that is a sign of the presence of God. So God is present in Elisha as twenty loaves of barley becomes enough for 100 people to eat and still have leftovers. Similarly, Jesus is able to feed 5000 with 5 barley loaves and 2 fish and still have leftovers. The abundance of the food is a sign of God’s activity and presence. That the little bit of food of the Eucharist satisfies our spiritual longings is a sign of the presence of God.
The message here for the church’s hospitality is that there should always be leftovers as a sign of God’s abundant offering to us. We can evoke the words of the psalm for today that Martin Luther used as a table blessing, “The eyes of all wait upon you, O Lord, and you give them their food in due season. You open wide your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.” How do we witness to God’s abundant provision?
The second lesson is a prayer that Christ may dwell in the hearts of believers through faith, and that we may comprehend the immeasurable love of Christ and be filled with the fullness of God. How do we demonstrate that fullness?
