9th Sunday after Pentecost – July 26, 2015
Mass at 11:00 a.m. Readings: Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15; Psalm 78:23-29; Ephesians 4:1-16; John 6:24-35. Pastor David G. Burke preaches and presides. Pastor Detweiler is on vacation through Tuesday, August 11.
Today’s gospel is the second in a series of five from John 6, all of them about the bread of life. Since this gospel contains a reference to God feeding the people of Israel with manna in the wilderness, it is paired with the story from Exodus of the Lord raining bread from heaven, a bread that was called “manna.” (In the psalm it is called the “bread of angels.”) In last week’s gospel, Jesus fed the crowd and there were an abundance of leftovers. In this section of John 6, Jesus describes himself as the bread of life, the one who brings the shalom of God.
Chapter 4 of Ephesians contains some of the most often quoted verses of the New Testament. “One Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all” is frequently quoted to describe the church’s unity. Verses 11-13 are foundational for the ministry of the whole people of God and the importance of a diversity of gifts to support that ministry. The conclusion of this reading presents a vision for the church and a challenge for it in every age. Where do we need to speak the truth in love, so we can grow up into Christ?
